Help seven girls in Bonsaaso, Ghana complete three years of secondary school.

Why we care: There are 67 million young people worldwide who remain out of school—60% of them are girls.

How we’re solving this: The Show Me Campaign—founded by nine-time Grammy award-winning artist and philanthropist John Legend—in partnership with Connect to Learn is raising funds to provide seven girls secondary school scholarships in Bonsaaso, Ghana, a remote rural community of about 35,000 people in Ghana’s Ashanti region.

Secondary education equips students with critical thinking skills, enabling civic participation and democratic change. The impact of girls’ secondary and higher education is linked directly to a decrease in child brides, lower fertility rates and healthier children among educated women.

By covering the tuition and books, room and board, and medical expenses for three years of secondary school, each girl will be able to focus on her academic career, rather than the financial burden of her education. While all of these girls have tested high enough to attend the school, their families cannot afford to cover the cost of the school fees, room and board. The hope is that these scholarships will not only change the girls’ lives, but will help to transform the entire community.

One previous scholarship recipient, Elizabeth, explains the value of her scholarship by saying that “when girls are educated, they change the world.”
