Many Latinas living in the United States have tremendous ambition but lack the resources to reach their potential.
Why we care: Though 80% of Latinas want to go to college, 17% of Latinas drop out of high school and only 15% have college degrees.
How we’re solving this: The Eva Longoria Foundation provides training to Latino parents with children enrolled in schools with a high percentage of Latino students on supporting their children attend college.
The parents enrolled in this program attend trainings for nine weeks that teach them how to support their children in applying to and preparing for college. These courses cover a variety of topics, including:
- What classes the kids need to take to be ready for college;
- How to set up meetings with teachers and counselors to make sure kids are on track;
- How to help with homework and the college application process;
- How grades are used for college admittance; and
- How to navigate the school system, among other information vital to the academic success of their children.
