FORWARD (Foundation for Women's Health, Research & Development)
FORWARD (Foundation for Women’s Health Research and Development) is a leading African Diaspora women’s campaign and support charity dedicated to advancing and safeguarding the sexual and reproductive health, rights and dignity of African girls and women. We enable women and girls to play a key role in changing practices and policies that affect their rights and wellbeing. FORWARD was founded in 1985 and works through partnerships in the UK, Europe and Africa. We tackle female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, obstetric fistula and related rights abuses of girls and young women. What is FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)? It involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, and/or injury to the female genital organs for cultural reasons. 100-140 million African women have undergone FGM worldwide. 24,000 girls are at high risk of undergoing the most severe form of FGM in the UK (FORWARD 2007).FORWARD is a member of Girls Not Brides a global partnership of more than 300 civil society organizations committed to end child marriage. www.girlsnotbrides.org @GirlsNotBrides
