Support West African girls and women obtain scholarships to universities, colleges, secondary and primary schools.

Why we care: In Liberia, there is a need to reduce the alarming disparity in the number of girls and young women getting secondary and post-secondary education as compared to their male counterparts.

How we’re solving this: By helping the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa grants full educational scholarships, called 360° of Academic Support and Skills Development, to girls and young women through its African Girls Leadership Initiative. The scholarships include school supplies, internships, stipend, travel arrangements, school supplies, and room and board.

The African Girls Leadership Initiative offers domestic scholarships to Liberian universities, colleges, secondary and primary schools for Liberian women and girls with tutoring available as needed. International scholarships to bachelor and master’s degree programs are also available for Liberian and West African women. In addition, paid internships are arranged for scholars at foundation-approved organizations related to their area of study; stipends are also available for students in need.

The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa proactively recruits talented yet disadvantaged girls and young women to its’ the African Girls Leadership Initiative program, with an aim to eliminate or mitigate all of the practical barriers to obtaining an education that Liberian and other West African girls and women typically face. The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa identifies and develops potential young women from desolate living environments who had no hope of continuing their education, hence helping them avoid being taken advantage of by unscrupulous characters; they also escape the abysmally negative pitfalls into which many of their unfortunate peers descend. At the end of the day, the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa hopes that there is a sense of empowerment instilled in them and most importantly, a sense of responsibility to give back to their communities.

The African Girls Leadership Initiative scholarships are possible via in-kind financial aid from donors and educational institutions. The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa is committed to ensuring that each scholar’s tuition and other costs associated with pursuing her education are covered in full for the duration of her course of study, including stipend for internships. All this is possible via contributions by generous donors whose hearts are touched by the purpose of this project.
