Train midwives to better deal with complicated births, ensuring safe deliveries for mother and child.
Why we care: The number of women dying in Cambodia is increasing.
How we’re solving this: Training midwives and birthing attendants in emergency obstretic care.
Discovering you’re pregnant should be a joyful experience, but in Cambodia women frequently die during childbirth, making it a fearful prospect.
Cambodia has been severely affected by war and political instability over the past 30 years, and the damage to health services is disproportionately affecting women. In Preah Vihear, a remote and mountainous region, the lack of maternal health services means women and children are dying at a faster rate than anywhere else in the country.
Going into labour with no health provision nearby and no one to help you is horrifying; we urgently need to train a team of midwives and birthing assistants to assist pregnant women in this area.
The government of Cambodia has pledged its commitment to supporting remote areas and ensuring universal access to health services, but they face a chronic lack of funds.
Your support will train 12 midwives in emergency obstetric care so that they can better deal with complications, ensuring women can give birth safely. It will also help train 100 birth attendants who live in these remote areas and can provide valuable support when a woman goes in to labour. They will be trained to recognise the early signs of complications and refer women to health services, as well as teaching of the need for pre-natal and ante-natal care.
Training midwives and birth attendants is a proven way of saving the lives of mothers and children.
