Help support Red Nosotras Radio provide women and LGBT people in Argentina a voice and a safe space to enter the public discourse.

Why we care: Homophobia, sexism, and machismo attitudes are endorsed by mainstream media and threaten the progress of women’s and LGBT rights groups in Argentina.

How we are solving this: Developing a global network of independent radio programming to promote the diverse perspectives of women and LGBT people.

Red Nosotras Radio (RNR), a global radio network established by Centro de Comunicación, in Argentina is crying out for alternative media that is thought provoking and based upon values of collaboration and inclusivity of all people.

In Latin America, four companies control 80 percent of the media, leaving little room for progressive thought and diverse opinions. Currently, mass media in Argentina plays into stereotypes, demeans women, promotes aggression and violence, and stigmatizes the gay community. With the majority of mainstream media sending these messages, women and the LGBT community are seen as outsiders in society.

RNR seeks to “democratize” media in Latin America and the world by ensuring a space that encourages and uplifts diverse perspectives and identities. RNR will develop independent, uncensored radio programming to share the real story. Collecting the most thought-provoking radio programming from its global network in Latin America and Europe, RNR will provide women and LGBT people a voice and a safe space to share their realities and enter the public discourse.

Through RNR’s network of over 50 grassroots organizations worldwide, it will give journalists, women and lesbian activists a political tool to fight harmful stereotypes. Programming will be free of messaging that promotes sexism, violence, and discrimination, and instead will focus on sparking dialogue, spreading the facts, and tackling gender issues. Participating journalists, women and LGBT activists will gain a supportive community of engaged listeners, global recognition, new partnerships and opportunities to turn ideas into actions. Participants will also contribute to online strategy planning meetings, develop effective awareness and communication strategies, and organize public events to increase visibility for the rights of women and LGBT peoples.

RNR’s radio headquarters will be in Córdoba, Argentina. It will develop a public outreach strategy with Centro de Comunicación y Género in Spain, and a production center will provide technical support for radio and online streaming in El Salvador. RNR will air one live program in Argentina each week and will also monitor popular programming, secure prime distribution time, and ensure broadcasts remain uncensored. Finally, RNR will circulate its bold programming and weekly event bulletins to its network of over 8,500 individuals and social change organizations. Support global independent radio and join with RNR to make women’s and LGBT people’s voices heard.
