Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) champions gender equality and combats urban poverty by linking free education for girls to a set of holistic community services accessible to all. SHOFCO is changing the lives of thousands in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. Our approach is a comprehensive solution to the challenges of urban poverty. We are deeply grateful for your involvement and support—together, we are more than a school—we are a movement! In 2011, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and actress and activist Olivia Wilde traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, where they were dazzled by the Kibera School for Girls and learned the remarkable story of its founders, Jessica and Kennedy Odede. The girls at the Kibera school were featured in the PBS documentary, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
